Due to the Corona pandemic, the city’s event halls and cinemas will remain closed until further notice. One way to still experience a bit of cultural community feeling is to visit drive-in cinemas. And so, in cooperation with the International Film Festival for Children and Young Audience SCHLINGEL and the two art house cinemas Metropol Chemnitz and Clubkino Siegmar, a great offer was created, organised by the C³ Chemnitz event centres.
“At the moment it is not foreseeable when bigger events can take place again. Therefore alternatives are in demand. The drive-in cinema is a good solution to offer the people of Chemnitz some entertainment and at the same time comply with the necessary rules of conduct. In the current situation, people have to live with great restrictions in their everyday life and leisure time. Cultural offerings that please people and promote social interaction are more important than ever”. says Dr. Ralf Schulze, Exhibition Director and organiser, looking forward to the new format.
“Especially for families who currently spend time together at home 24/7, the drive-in cinema offers a welcome change far away from their own four walls. Alone in the car and yet together with all visitors, films can be watched that allow a journey to other countries, environments and situations – an unforgettable experience for the whole family”, Michael Harbauer, director of the film festival SCHLINGEL is convinced. “Drive-in cinema is no substitute for the cosy cinema evening. But it is a chance to experience something in community, to escape the loneliness of the home couch and all this without an increased risk of infection. This is why we support the project,” says Maret Wolff, operator of the Metropol cinema. Together with the SCHLINGEL team and Clubkino Siegmar, she puts together the film programme. Thilo Götz, operator of the Club Cinema Siegmar adds: “Even though we are currently not able to show films in the Club Cinema itself, we are happy about the chance to support a project that exceeds our own possibilities by far, but together with our partners offers a good opportunity to show cinema films on a big screen during this time”.
