Thank you thank you for celebrating yesterday at weltecho with us and the DJs from the current cultural capitals Plovdiv and Matera. It was great!

Impressions of the night can be found in our social media channels:

It was the start of the “Capital of Culture application year” and whetted the appetite for more: Last Saturday, Chemnitz residents, guests and night owls found their way to the world echo and celebrated together at the “Capital Party”.

But before the two DJs from this year’s capitals of culture, Matera and Plovdiv, started to dance to the sets, DJ Damiano (Matera) and DJ George (Plovdiv) answered the audience’s questions in a round of talks.

One of the most memorable sentences of the Italian was: “Matera was once the shame of Italy. Today we are the European Capital of Culture 2019,” he said, “the city is an example of the changes a city and its people can undergo, with new theatres, large and small projects, exhibitions and bars. While the citizens of Matera were not necessarily proud of their city before the title “European Capital of Culture”, they are even more so now.

In Plovdiv everything looks a little different. DJ George said that the citizens have always been very proud of their city. They supported the application process and were very happy about the title. The second largest city in Bulgaria has always been a cultural metropolis, but now it attracts more young people: “We are happy to welcome every guest, no matter where they come from or what color they are! And last but not least, the title makes a city known worldwide, which certainly helps tourism and business.

It was an exciting discussion in which questions from the audience were also answered. The conclusion of the two DJs: Chemnitz is a lively city. In addition, it is good that the people of Chemnitz are taken along at the trial. This was different in Matera, for example, where not as many people were interested in a comparable event as in this party in Chemnitz. When asked whether it was worthwhile applying for the title of Capital of Culture, DJ Damiano replied: “It’s definitely worth going down this road, regardless of whether the project ends successfully or not.

Chemnitz has set out for 2019 with this relaxed, interesting party night in world echo. Further opportunities will be offered this year.
