Chemnitz wants to become European Capital of Culture in 2025.

Why not? We’ve got what it takes.

And of course such a big headline also helps to initiate a noticeable departure in Chemnitz. A new beginning, in which the city culture comes into focus –

the rhythm of the night

<the manifold togetherness in the district and the whole region

<the beautiful life on the banks of the Chemnitz

the places where history breathes and the future is born

the free space for creative people from all over the world

the hidden beauty

Everything that makes the city more liveable, that makes the people of Chemnitz proud of their city and where the challenges of Europe are openly negotiated – where regional coexistence defends the values that unite the continent.

Of course this is not an easy way, but has Chemnitz ever had it easy?

The Capital of Culture application aims to make the city’s potential visible and tangible. And to achieve this, it is worthwhile to bundle the creative forces, to generate energy that moves the city society in a sustainable way.

<So what else is possible in a city…

<… which takes the pride of earlier generations into the future – even if at first glance it seems as hopeless as the project of the Viadukt e.V., founded in 2014, to prevent the decision of Deutsche Bahn AG to demolish the viaduct at Annaberger Strasse. But commitment and perseverance ultimately led to the emergence of a citizens' movement that forced the company to rethink.

<…which attracts attention with its creative flair – even if it's such a crazy idea as a brightly shining chimney, bathed in colour by none other than Daniel Buren. Yet the design by the French artist, known for his large-scale projects, did not only have friends at first. But after intensive discourse, the highest work of art in Saxony has become a popular landmark.

… which gives room for cultural diversity – even if only temporarily like at the IBUG, the international festival for urban art. For the audience response in the cultural region of Chemnitz proves the fascination that emanates from the idea of transforming almost forgotten industrial wastelands into new exciting places thanks to artistic intervention.

….. <Strongly defending democracy with culture and organizing the #we aremore concert within a few days for an open, tolerant society, which gathers 65.000 people. It will be continued with Kosmos Chemnitz, the festival for music, democracy and an open society. On 40 stages in the middle of the city, the message will be expressed on 4 July in concerts, readings, exhibitions and discussion groups: #we staymore

With our current campaign, we are taking up these exemplary questions and writing it all in capital letters on billboards:

<Chemnitz has what it takes to become the European Capital of Culture in 2025.

This is not an assertion to give courage, but should help to face the facts: In the beginning there’s always a crazy, challenging idea, but in the end the people of Chemnitz have often made something big out of it.
<We would also like to make the motifs available to all those who still have room in canteens or shop windows, on pin boards or in meeting rooms.

That’s why they can be downloaded here.

motif: fighting is worthwhile

Motif: It is worthwhile to open it

motif: it’s worth a try

motive: maintenance is worthwhile
