Chemnitz is part of an exciting European cultural project in the digital world: Europe At Home. At the invitation of Faro (application for the title European Capital of Culture 2027), cities have come together that have put culture at the top of their urban development agenda, cities that are, have been or want to be associated with the European Capital of Culture project.

    <Bodø (Norway)

    <Chemnitz (Germany)

  • Esch (Luxembourg)
  • <Faro (Portugal)
    <Kaunas (Lithuania)

    <Leeuwarden (Netherlands)

    <Novi Sad (Serbia)
    <Oulu (Finland)

  • Piran (Slovenia)
  • <Plovdiv (Bulgaria)

  • San Sebastian (Spain / Basque Country)
  • <Tartu (Estonia)
    <Valletta (Malta)
    <Veszprèm (Hungary)

Through photos and words, the project wants to offer an artistic perspective on this unexpected moment we are experiencing. For the future remembrance of this unique historical moment imposed by the Covid 19 pandemic, but also to better understand each other and thus to better accept our differences, the city of Faro in the south of Portugal (bidding for the title of European Capital of Culture 2027) has invited a first group of cities in which Chemnitz is integrated to capture this unique moment through the lens of a photographer and the words of a literary artist.

The Chemnitz contributions

<The author: Johanna Eisner was born in 1988 in Reichenbach/Vogtland. In 2007 she moved to Chemnitz to study media & communication sciences, which was more a compromise than a feeling of happiness. Today she still lives in the city and finds it quite alright. During her studies she spent more time in the university radio than in the seminar room. There she headed the music editorial office for five years, because in the past she always wanted to be a music journalist, fashion designer, author of children's books, guitarist and famous, preferably all at the same time. But that didn't quite work out: today she works as a copywriter and concept developer in the advertising world and writes as a freelance cultural journalist for the Chemnitz daily newspaper "Freie Presse", city magazines and other city projects.

<The photographer: Philipp Gladsome was born in 1989 in Karl-Marx-Stadt and grew up in Chemnitz. From there he first moved to Leipzig in 2002, before he trained as a social assistant in Berlin. After successfully completing his training, he taught himself photography. Today he commutes between Berlin and his hometown Chemnitz, but his main work as a portrait and music photographer takes him all over the world (if the coronavirus doesn't stop him). During his career he has photographed a number of national and international stars, including Dita von Teese, Matthias Schweighöfer, Robin Schulz, Gregory Porter and U2. He also does advertising shoots, for example for Adidas, Porsche, Volkswagen and Samsung.
