With GEGENWARTEN | PRESENCES a public art project will take place in Chemnitz this summer 2020. Works by 20 artists and collectives will be shown. In their works they have dealt with Chemnitz, its history and society. This has resulted in interventions and sculptures, installations and performances.

Based on the observation that there are many presences – whose different perspectives and themes are negotiated in private spaces, but above all in public space – the public art project deals with the specific social, political and urban questions of Chemnitz.

Art in public space can help to discover hidden aspects of a city, to show commonalities, to link them synergistically and thus to tell both forgotten and new stories. Furthermore, art is particularly capable of making these visible and tangible and of showing the people of a city alternative presences.

The exhibition project is curated by Florian Matzner and Sarah Sigmund and organized by Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. It represents an important stage in the application for the European Capital of Culture 2025.
