At the city council meeting on 30 January 2019, the new cultural strategy was adopted under the motto “Give space to culture”. The focus is on the cultural development of the city until 2030, and under the leadership of the cultural sector, formats are now being developed to implement the cultural strategy.

The Chemnitz Cultural Strategy 2018 to 2030 promotes cultural integration on three levels: On the individual level, cultural interests of citizenship are recognized and preserved. The aim is to make cultural activities accessible to all population groups in the city. At the urban level, the Cultural Strategy provides impulses for the development of guidelines for overall urban planning and social issues of urban development. At European level, the Cultural Strategy is intended to anchor the city of Chemnitz in the supra-regional and international cultural landscape.

The cultural strategy also focuses on facilitating access to culture. It aims to optimise the exchange between actors and create communicative networking. Cultural practitioners are to be further trained and professionalized.

The strategy comprises six thematic fields and formulates important directions for action:

    <Modernity in Chemnitz

  • Give room! Create conditions, develop funding models
  • <Industrial culture

  • Cultural and creative industries as a source of inspiration
  • <Cultural education

  • Cultural Communication, Cultural Marketing and International Cooperation

These topics are to be implemented through concrete measures. Examples of these measures include simplified application procedures for cultural funding, the possibility of funding over several years, as well as support for spontaneously arising projects and an annual reserve fund. Other important measures concern communication, public relations and marketing activities.

background and additional information:

Since 2016, six thematic areas have been developed in a broad-based dynamic process, which are intended to provide guidelines for a medium-term period up to 2030. On 31 May 2018, the Culture Committee (draft no. B-154/2018) decided on the thematic priorities for the comprehensive cultural strategy to be developed. The public was involved in the display of the B-154/2018 proposal and at the “Culture Strategy Debate Day” on 3 May 2018. Comments and suggestions were taken into account in the further development of the strategy. Subsequently, by August 2018, the participants in the cultural strategy process worked out proposed measures for the thematic areas in greater detail and weighted them in order to reflect them in the complete document “Cultural Strategy of the City of Chemnitz for the Years 2018 to 2030”.

The cultural strategy was developed jointly by around 150 people. Most of them worked on a voluntary basis in theme groups, workshops and future workshops. A steering team coordinated the entire process under the leadership of the cultural sector. The editorial team brought together all the available results, developed and structured the texts.
