Making big things happen on a small scale – with this approach, committed citizens have already been able to implement their own projects since 2017 as part of the Capital of Culture application. Around 60 ideas have already been promoted in the course of the process and have led to exciting debates, encounters and networking within the city and in the districts. Now that Chemnitz has been selected by the jury as the European Capital of Culture 2025, a new round of micro-projects is naturally starting.

It is possible to submit an idea until 15 April 2021. The project outline must show what exactly is to be realised and in what time frame, what relation this project has to the European Capital of Culture title and how much budget is necessary for it. Up to 2,500 € per project can be applied for – up to 3,000 € for projects with European implications. An own contribution is not a prerequisite. The projects should strengthen the cultural diversity of the city, stimulate international exchange and encourage social interaction. Projects can be submitted informally to chemnitz2025@stadt-chemnitz.de.

An independent jury consisting of various stakeholders from the local community then selects the strongest projects that can be directly implemented. The aim is to support small ideas in their realisation in an unbureaucratic way. An expansion of the micro-projects into the Chemnitz cultural region is planned for the next round. Talks are already being held with the newly founded association in the cultural region.
