SUMMARY:De:Oriento Pre-programme | Orientalism - Elements of an anamnesis
DESCRIPTION:The title of the French edition (1980) of the original America
 n publication Orientalism (1978) by Edward W. Saïd is L'Orientalisme : L'
Orient créé par l'Occident\, i.e. Orientalism: The Orient Created by the
Occident. Over the decadesOver the decades\, the invention of the other h
as travelled a long way .... and we smile wearily\, but we continue to tel
 l stories. Maybe because we can't do anything else?Edward Saïd's magnum o
pus\, which looks more like the French habilitation of a literary scholar\
, has nevertheless had an undeniable influence on the development of postc
olonial studies\, even if it is more of a practical demonstration studyit
is more of a practical demonstration study than the conceptualisation of a
theoretical structure: the presentation of the invention thesis among thi
nkers and writers\, especially in the Anglophone and Francophone regions.
Edward W. Saïd (1935 - 2003)\, born in Jerusalem\, spent his childhood an
d early youth there and in Cairo\, lived\, loved and taught mainly in the
United States of America. He was a respected defender of the Palestinian c
ause. With the beginning of the Oslo Accords\, the distance to Arafat grew
. It was Saïd who founded the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with Daniel Ba
renboim in 1999\, with the intention of having 80 young musicians from Isr
ael and the neighbouring Arab states play and perform together in Europe e
very summer. A salon with free\, unbridled thinking and convivial\, sparkl
ing drinks will get everyone and everything foaming at the mouth.
