On 31 July, the art installation “District Chemnitz” was opened at the Karl Marx Monument. The art installation is part of the IBUG in Chemnitz. The sponsor is KulturTragwerk Sachsen e.V., which would like to make a contribution to the topic of participation/exclusion with this installation. The project is supported by the city of Chemnitz within the framework of the federal programme “Demokratie Leben” with a total of 6000 Euros and is financed by donations and own contributions.

Florian Huber was born in Trier in 1985 and completed his training as a forestry manager and his studies as a social pedagogue in Darmstadt. Since 2014 the artist has been living and working in Hamburg. He is a founding member of the cultural association dasblumen e.V. and curator of xpon-art.
Inclusion and exclusion are central themes in the works of Florian Huber. The autodidactic artist often uses construction fences and/or barbed wire as basic materials for his installations and objects and alienates them in their function and effect. His works can be seen at various locations nationally and internationally (e.g.: A4 Contemporary Arts Center in Chengdu/China).

In Chemnitz he deals with the topic of exclusion through individually designed cell-like spaces. These form an unfinished unit of the sculpture “District”. As a border symbol as well as a concrete border, the building fence appears to people from different cultures, times and life situations in the most diverse contexts and meanings.

The artwork is not a closed system. It is an invitation to communication, interior design and creative engagement with the theme. For this purpose, the area around the Marx Monument was chosen as the central location.

Individual design of the resulting cells opens up new living and experiential spaces. Actors who would like to participate in this process should contact: info@ktw-sachsen.de or the Facebook group District – we enliven free spaces.
