Garage stories

with Cosima Terrace

GDR garages built by people themselves are of great emotional significance to their users. They are usually passed down from generation to generation. They are huge storehouses of history, which the artist Cosima Terrasse takes up and processes.

Garage courtyards are always a reflection of local urban history. Their foundations are based on various events, individuals, anecdotes and even myths, which are brought to life through a participatory art project. Conversations and interviews with garage users and builders form the basis of Cosima Terrasse's work, which she transforms into a multi-part installation together with the interviewees.

We have already heard of a bee colony that was found in a garage and later ended up in a newly founded city apiary, of marathon runners who pushed their wheelbarrows particularly fast when building a garage together in 1963, of garages full of childhood memories and wall newspapers that proudly tell of the sporting careers of two generations of Chemnitz footballers in grandpa's garage. These and many other stories bring the history of Chemnitz to life.

The project is being realised with the support of the Austrian Cultural Forum Berlin.
