Rummelplatz

An abstract illustration features geometric shapes in warm tones of orange and yellow. Two overlapping circular shapes dominate the background, while a partially filled circular shape with radiating lines is connected to the lower right by two diagonal, lattice-like structures.

Preparations for the premiere of a contemporary opera in Chemnitz begin with a writing workshop. The starting point is Werner Bräunig's social novel Rummelplatz. The work describes in an impressive way how people relate to the collective developments of their time. An opera, a conference and writing workshops - that is Rummelplatz.

Rummelplatz - an opera in Chemnitz

Theater Chemnitz is developing the multi-part project Rummelplatz. The starting point is Werner Bräunig's novel of the same name, which Ludger Vollmer (composition) and Jenny Erpenbeck (libretto) are adapting as a musical theater work for the stage. The world premiere of the work is planned for fall 2025. It will be about how people relate to social conditions, the political system and the thoughts and moods of their time.

To accompany this, Chemnitz Opera has launched a participatory, international writing workshop program that uses methods of autobiographical writing. The workshops are a place for people from the city and region who want to record unheard-of events or pursue questions that have been bothering them for a long time. Untold stories are brought up, worked through and given resonance. In addition to dealing with individual topics, the focus is on encounters between generations and nations. There is another writing workshop in Ústí nad Labem, which is in exchange with the one in Chemnitz.

A conference aimed at a broad, non-specialist audience is also part of the project and will be held on the weekend of the premiere in fall 2025.
