Barrier-free access

The Hartmannfabrik is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. The building is wheelchair-accessible (no steps). There is a tactile floor guidance system on the ground floor for people with visual impairments. This leads to the reception, cloakroom, lift and toilet. A barrier-free toilet is located in the entrance area on the ground floor. The 1st floor can be reached by lift. The entrance for wheelchair users is located parallel to Fabrikstraße on the north side of the building and can be reached by hand buttons. There are two disabled parking spaces. Accompanying persons can park directly at the Hartmannfabrik.

Information on the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and the projects in plain language can be found here. You can search for accessible events in our calendar of events under "Select filter".

Industrial history

Einstige Maschinenhalle

Built in 1864, the Hartmann factory was once part of the globally successful engineering company of "locomotive king" Richard Hartmann. Just as it was a centre of industrial progress back then, the Hartmann factory is now once again a place of creativity and innovation and a symbol of the city's ability to change, which is characterised by many transformation processes. After standing empty for a long time, the listed building has been renovated and is one of the 30 intervention areas of the city of Chemnitz, an urban development project for the European Capital of Culture.

Art at the Hartmannfabrik

Collateral Sculptures

A temporary exhibition titled “Collateral Sculptures” is open to the public in the outdoor grounds; it was developed for the Hartmannfabrik by owner Udo Pfeiffer and the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.  Artists of international renown were invited to install sculptures and artworks on the grounds and in the gardens of the Hartmannfabrik: Atelier van Lieshout, Tatjana Doll, Franka Hörnschemeyer, Heike Mutter / Ulrich Genth, and Lydia Thomas. Additional contributions are also in the planning stages. The project was curated by Sabine Maria Schmidt, curator at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. The complete “Collateral Sculptures” exhibition was on view until January 2026; currently still on display are: Tatjana Doll: “The light at the end of the tunnel is the light of the locomotive coming toward me” (2024), Heike Mutter / Ulrich  Genth: “Sleeping Horse” (2023),  Lydia Thomas: “Gravitation (Cyberfaun and Guardian)” (2024).
