Industrial history

Einstige Maschinenhalle

Built in 1864, the Hartmann factory was once part of the globally successful engineering company of "locomotive king" Richard Hartmann. Just as it was a centre of industrial progress back then, the Hartmann factory is now once again a place of creativity and innovation and a symbol of the city's ability to change, which is characterised by many transformation processes. After standing empty for a long time, the listed building has been renovated and is one of the 30 intervention areas of the city of Chemnitz, an urban development project for the European Capital of Culture.

Art at the Hartmann Factory

Collateral Sculptures

The free exhibition “Collateral Sculptures” was developed by Udo Pfeiffer and the Chemnitz Art Collections for the outdoor spaces at the Hartmannfabrik. Curated by Sabine Maria Schmidt, the exhibition brought together sculptures and artworks by artists of international standing. Following the conclusion of the main exhibition in January 2026, two works will remain on display: Tatjana Doll: “The light at the end of the tunnel is the light of the locomotive coming towards me” (2024) and Heike Mutter / Ulrich Genth: “Sleeping Horse” (2023).

Barrier-free access

The Hartmannfabrik is accessible for visitors with reduced mobility. The building is wheelchair-accessible (no steps). There is a tactile floor guidance system on the ground floor for people with visual impairments. This leads to the reception, cloakroom, lift and toilet. A barrier-free toilet is located in the entrance area on the ground floor. The 1st floor can be reached by lift. The entrance for wheelchair users is located parallel to Fabrikstraße on the north side of the building and can be reached by hand buttons. There are two disabled parking spaces. Accompanying persons can park directly at the Hartmannfabrik.
