Just in time for the opening weekend of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, the Chemnitz 2025 Makerhub ESCHE LAB will also open at the ESCHE Museum in Limbach-Oberfrohna. The ESCHE LAB is a workshop for creative textile work, focussing on knitting, embroidery and ready-to-wear clothing, and also offers a place for people to meet and exchange ideas. The workshop is located on the 3rd floor of the ESCHE Museum and is complemented by an intervention in the permanent exhibition of the Esche Museum. In addition to sewing machines, embroidery machines and hand knitting machines, the "Kniterate", a digital flat knitting machine, is available in this newly designed area. Here, textile designs can be transformed into customised knitted fabrics or finished individual items.

Visitors can experience modern knitting alongside the museum's historical machines and understand the technical development. The "Kniterate" knitting machine can be used by interested parties by appointment.

The ESCHE LAB is one of nine maker hubs of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. In the open workshops at Stadtwirtschaft Chemnitz and at eight locations in the Capital of Culture region, visitors can learn from each other and create something new together. In terms of content, the locations have different focuses: While the ESCHE LAB is all about knitting, the Makerhub NETZ-Werk in Neukirchen/Erzgebirge focuses on culinary topics, the UW Etzdorf cultural network locates urban art in rural industrial culture and the Lehngericht Augustusburg invites you to the digital Hutzenstube with traditional craft techniques and new technologies.

The Makerhubs are an initiative of Makers, Business & Arts, one of five flagship projects of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH, in cooperation with the State Association of Culture and Creative Industries Saxony e.V.

Information on all nine Makerhubs is available at https://chemnitz2025.de/makers-business-arts/makerhubs/

The ESCHE LAB will be opened on 19 January 2025 at 2 pm as part of a festive event. From 3 pm, everyone is cordially invited to an open day at the LAB and the museum. All information can be found on the website of the Esche Museum.
