Volunteer report: Bird's-eye views and "Felting for everyone"

A group of people are sitting around a table doing arts and crafts. Various materials such as fabric, scissors and glue are scattered around the table. The room is furnished with chairs, cups and colourful decorations. Everyone looks focussed and absorbed in their work.

Volunteers for Chemnitz 2025 publish reports on their experiences, assignments and adventures around the European Capital of Culture.

Bodo is 65 years old and lives in Neukirchen in the Ore Mountains. The former group and project leader has been a "volunteer from the very beginning" and has been involved in Chemnitz 2025 for several years. He uses his organisational expertise in the volunteer editorial team and takes care of archiving the texts.

The #3000 garage project "Vogelperspektiven" has launched an interesting workshop project in collaboration with Sabine Hochmuth. Sabine Hochmuth, also known as Wollbine, founded her felting workshop in Borna in 2006 and uses a garage in her yard for her felting courses.

The #3000 Garages team was also able to recruit Finnish artist Kati Hyyppä for this project. She is a Berlin-based artist and designer who works in the field between art and technology and is known for her creative workshops.

On 6 and 9 November 2024, both artists led the first hands-on workshops in Chemnitz. The aim is to create a patchwork artwork that combines different perspectives, bird's-eye views and other beautiful impressions.

I was amazed at how the hobby artists from different countries created such beautiful felt works at the meeting on 6 November 2024.

Chemnitz is perceived differently by everyone - it is more than just the Red Tower or the Karl Marx Monument.

In this project, you can express your impressions and wishes in felt and embroidery objects. Favourite places or other important places in and around Chemnitz are to be depicted. The idea is to combine numerous motifs into an overall picture as a carpet that explains the works and names of the hobby artists.

Felting is a very creative and versatile technique that is suitable for both beginners and advanced artists.beginners, young and old, are also invited to learn the felting technique. Everyone is welcome to take part in this project!

I also ventured into the art of dry felting and my first work was a car that symbolises a deep connection to our traditional industrial city. Felting is a wonderful activity that has given me great pleasure and revealed to me the creative freedom of this craft.

You can create your ideas at home, in the workshops or in Sabine Hochmuth's wool garage.

The entire artwork with the many different motifs will be shown in an exhibition next September/October as part of the City of Culture year.

I can't wait to see what impressive little textile artworks will be created, united in one carpet.
