Books need to be read by the people – or better, read aloud. Reading aloud mentors have been around for a while, and National Reading Aloud Day is very popular in Chemnitz. Thanks to volunteer readers, nurseries, schools and multi-generational centres, as well as a museum railway station and municipal libraries are well-attended venues for enjoying the landscape of the written word in spoken form. The CLAXE project goes even further and turns one day into a whole series in the Capital of Culture year. It finds unusual venues for its activities: there will be reading aloud at the animal park »Tierpark Chemnitz«, in companies and cinemas, on cycle tours, bus trips and hiking routes. The friends’ associations »Förderverein Stadtbibliothek Chemnitz« and the »Freundeskreis der Stadtbibliothek Lichtenstein« are jointly organising the project and pursuing the idea of a reading axis between thetwo locations.
