Visual and performing arts will complement and enrich each other in a special collaboration this summer in Chemnitz: the art festival Begehungen will take place from 19 June to 5 July 2026 in conjunction with the THEATER DER WELT festival in the Chemnitz Schauspielhaus, which is currently unused due to structural defects. Every year, the festival temporarily presents visual art in an empty space. Under the title theme IN THE PRESENTATION, artistic positions that deal with the production and communication of reality are shown there in line with the THEATER DER WELT programme.
The Begehungen art festival has been one of the city's outstanding cultural events for over 20 years. Every year, it opens up a different empty space and revitalises it with art for a short time. A former prison, abandoned allotments, an old brewery and an overgrown railway station have all been venues for the festival. The unconventional approach to art is its trademark. For this reason, the walks are not just a temporary art exhibition - they are a meeting place for people from a wide variety of backgrounds. As part of the European Capital of Culture 2025 programme, the festival took place in July and August 2025 on the site of the decommissioned Chemnitz-Nord lignite-fired power plant.
