Rapid growth and splendid wealth coupled with precarious living conditions. Later a radical collapse and the necessary reinvention.

Experience the exciting development of the city of Chemnitz up to the current transformation processes. Chemnitz gave the starting signal for industrialisation in Saxony and developed into the "Saxon Manchester". However, these "Manchester" cities can be found all over Europe and show that Chemnitz is not alone in its challenges: the French city of Mulhouse, Tampere in Finland, Gabrovo in Bulgaria, Łódź in Poland and, of course, the eponymous Manchester in northern England. How do they deal with their industrial heritage? What strategies do the cities have for their future and what can we learn from each other?

Immerse yourself in the development processes of these cities from the 19th century to the present day, experience history, the present and visions of the future through digital enhancements. Discover the stories of people who are breathing new life into the industrial buildings of the 19th century. Here, foundries become universities, spinning mills become luxury lofts and factory halls become studio buildings.

Tales of Transformation

In its major exhibition ‘Tales of Transformation’, the Industriemuseum Chemnitz compares the development of former industrial hotspots: Chemnitz, Gabrovo, Łódź, Manchester, Mulhouse and Tampere. The exhibition sheds light on the impulses for the future coming from these cities and what they can learn from each other: rapid growth and splendid wealth paired with precarious living conditions - later a radical collapse and the necessary reinvention. The exhibition is part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
