"Before I go, I want to sing a song that someone wrote for me a long time ago. I don't know where she is now. But if you are very quiet, maybe she can hear me."
Young Hansel undergoes surgery to become a woman in order to find love and leave East Berlin for the USA. Hansel becomes Hedwig. She remembers her old self for the rest of her life and allows Hedwig to hover between the sexes from then on. Left by her husband a short time later, Hedwig keeps her head above water in her new home in America with poorly paid jobs until she falls in love again: she composes songs for the new man, in whom Hedwig sees her completion, and thus helps him to become a celebrated superstar. When he also dumps her and runs off with her work, Hedwig embarks on her very own tour with her band "The Angry Inch".
