On March 26, 2026, the complete program for the Theater der Welt 2026 festival will be published – and advance ticket sales will begin at the same time. This marks the start of the countdown to Germany's largest international festival for contemporary performing arts, which will take place in Chemnitz from June 18 to July 5, 2026.

In the event series “Insights into the Theater der Welt Festival” on March 31 at the Hartmannfabrik, festival directors Dr. Christoph Dittrich and Stefan Schmidtke will present the program and the various venues in detail.

More than 30 productions from Canada, Australia, Taiwan, Indonesia, China, Ivory Coast, Iran, Sri Lanka, and many other countries will be shown—a panorama of global perspectives, languages, and theater forms. The performances were selected by nine international curators. They sought out the most exciting artists in their respective regions of origin and invited them to Chemnitz to present their work.

Since its founding by the International Theater Institute (ITI), Theater der Welt has established itself as one of the most important festivals on the international theater scene. Since 1981, the Theater der Welt festival has been held every three years in a different city, most recently in Frankfurt am Main and Offenbach. The only edition in Saxony to date took place in Dresden in 1996. Each location creates its own individual program. Theater der Welt 2026 is being organized jointly by the Theater Chemnitz, The Festival Academy Brussels, and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH.

Theatre of the World is a festival of the German Centre of the International Theatre Institute e.V. and is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Free State of Saxony and the City of Chemnitz.
