What are the causes of the extensive Russian invasion of Ukraine three years ago? What are the causes of the new division of Europe? Why is Russia waging a hybrid war against the European Union? What role can diplomacy play? Were and are there opportunities for a just peace? How does Russian society behave, how is Russia developing internally? How do people in Eastern Europe talk about the war? How has Donald Trump's re-election as US President changed the situation? What does all this have to do with us in Germany? These questions are the subject of heated debate, especially in eastern Germany.

Michael Thumann has worked for many years as Eastern Europe correspondent for the ZEIT in Moscow. For his latest book, "Eisiges Schweigen flussabwärts" (Icy Silence Downstream), he travelled overland from Moscow to Berlin. In a very personal, melancholy travelogue, he describes the people, their view of the world and politics on both sides of the river.
