Power and the media: influence versus democratisation in Europe?

Wednesday, 28 May 2025, 7 pm, Museum Gunzenhauser

Panel guests:

Ulli Grießhammer, deputy team leader of counselling at Hate Aid

Thorsten Benner, political scientist, Global Public Policy Institute

Moderation: Gemma Pörzgen, journalist

This event will look at the complex interaction between media and power in a networked world. Digital and social media in particular influence public opinion and political decision-making processes. Who is utilising the strategies of digital political communication? And how do we as individuals deal with disinformation and hate speech online?

Thorsten Benner sheds light on the global and European dimensions, in particular the new alliances between politics and right-wing populism and their influence on European politics and regulations. Ulli Grießhammer then draws the bow to everyday socio-political life, giving concrete insights into the practical work of Hate Aid - an organisation against digital violence.

In cooperation with the Saxon State Centre for Political Education and part of the series Europe needs dialogue!

European Realities

The exhibition project European Realities at the Gunzenhauser Museum includes positions from various European countries, in particular from Northern, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. The diverse realist movements that were visible almost everywhere in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s are shown on an up to now unique scale. The exhibition tells of hunger and misery, of the modernisation of industry, reports on the economic upswing and cultural prosperity, of technical progress, the big city and nightlife, emancipation and diversity. The exhibition is part of the main programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025.
