We still see them today in parades, carved Christmas decorations and even on an altar: proud miners in smart uniforms. The traditional profession shaped the economy and culture of the Ore Mountains on the border of Saxony and the Czech Republic in two ways. Coins were minted from the mined and processed silver ore. These formed the basis for the wealth of the region, which is still on display today in the  Grünen Gewölbe in Dresden.

The exhibition on mining brings to light what went on underground for thousands of years. It reveals the dark secrets of the miners from the Bronze Age to the 21st century. Mining has always been a laboratory for technical, social and economic innovations that often have long-lasting effects. And where will we actually get the raw materials in the future to cope with the upcoming transformations?
