Panel discussion: Too much, too little, too foreign - which EU do people want?

Chemnitz is the European Capital of Culture. Yet the EU seems foreign. Nevertheless it intervenes in our everyday lives, regulating bottles and light bulbs. But many people miss the big issues. How could the EU function better? What kind of EU is wanted?

The EU is present everywhere in the city, yet it is a stranger. It is not a (federal) state, but claims state-like competences for itself. It often intervenes in everyday life, for example by regulating bottles and lids, light bulbs or straws, which sometimes seems petty to some. On the other hand, many people miss its influence on major issues such as defence and social cohesion. But how can the people do better? What kind of EU do people want? Is it even wanted? Should it become a (federal) state?

The panel will discuss questions such as these with experts from various areas of society as well as with Chemnitz citizens. The panel discussion will be moderated by the well-known ARD journalist Susann Reichenbach.

The panellists will be:

- Martin Schulz, Chairman of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, President of the European Parliament from 2012 - 2017

- Nora Mandru, PhD student at the University of Leipzig for European integration

- Dr Burkhard Müller, Chemnitz author and member of the TU Chemnitz

- Anne Lena Mösken, deputy editor-in-chief, Freie Presse Chemnitz

Please register for the panel discussion by 5 May at: https://mitdenken.sachsen.de/1051139
