#3000Garages Trail

Explore the Chemnitz garage landscape independently at ten locations

Residents and guests explored Chemnitz on their own with a walk along the garage trail. They strolled through the garage courtyard, looked over the fence, found local stories and got talking to their fellow residents. Bright yellow funnel-shaped information stations, designed by budding designers from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, were set up at the 10 locations. These presented short stories and curious facts.

The garages themselves were not permanently open, as they were private spaces in use. The focus was not on the sights, but on the everyday: The garage trail invited visitors to get to know Chemnitz anew through its inconspicuous places. There was no fixed order, the tour could be started and ended at any station, whether on foot, by bike or by public transport.

Design studies

In preparation, interior design students at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle developed a narrative trail that marks garage locations in Chemnitz's urban space. The result is ensembles of urban furniture to inform, linger and immerse oneself in. Sections of the designs were realised in their original size; selected elements were then placed at the stations of the garage trail.
