Stefan Heym was one of the most important German writers of the 20th century. Born in Chemnitz, he fled the Nazis in 1933 and moved to the GDR in 1952. In 1994, he became chairman of the German Bundestag by seniority. This weekend is dedicated to his life and work. Those unfamiliar with Heym can get a feel for his writing at the readings on Friday. A dinner on Saturday will feature some of Heym’s favourite dishes. To accompany the meal, we will hear from those who knew Heym and about their experiences with the writer. On Sunday, a matinee with contemporary witnesses will focus on his books and what we can learn from him and his work for our shared coexistence in European society.
