Hohndorf and its European roots

Home and Heritage

P: Gemeinde Hohndorf

What and where is »home«? The small town of Hohndorf, idyllically situated on the edge of the Ore Mountains, takes a mindful look at its own history in search of stories of immigration. Black coal was once mined in the region, bringing many people from all over Europe here. Some were recruited by the mine operators, but most came to escape poverty at home. Archive research and interviews with older residents have resulted in a collection of stories that will be presented at the popular village festival. Plus, an exhibition honours the painter Willibald Mayerl, the town’s most famous son  himself being a child of immigrants.
