Glauchau

Large district town, Saxony Cooperative State University, Bismarck Tower observation tower, Silbermann organ, Forderglauchau Hinterglauchau double castle, "art gluchowe" gallery, villa district, Muldenaue reservoir recreation area

The town of Glauchau is located in the foothills of the Ore Mountains between Chemnitz and Zwickau in the valley of the Zwickauer Mulde. Glauchau is a centre of business, culture and education. The town, which was first mentioned as a Slavic settlement in 1240 and now has a population of just under 22,000, will also become a university town in 2025 as the location of the Saxony Cooperative State University. The city's landmark is the Bismarck Tower on Bismarckhöhe, which at 45 metres is the tallest sandstone tower still standing in Germany. From here you can look out over the 400-hectare recreational area of the Stausee and Muldenaue reservoirs and the sporting activities that take place there.

A special feature of the baroque town church in Glauchau is the Silbermann organ from 1730, the only large, fully preserved Silbermann organ in western Saxony. Also worth seeing is the villa district with over 30 villas in the late classicist and neo-renaissance styles. The cultural centre of the large district town is the architecturally unique Glauchau Castle - a double castle from the first half of the 16th century, consisting of Forderglauchau Castle and Hinterglauchau Castle. The castles house a museum and art collection, the town and district library, the "art gluchowe" gallery and a district music school.
