The municipality of Neukirchen/Erzgeb. and its district of Adorf, with a total of 6,900 inhabitants, borders Chemnitz to the south-west. First mentioned in the middle of the 13th century, the village initially belonged to the von Hünerkopf family, who left behind a castle and manor house that has been preserved to this day - the moated castle of Klaffenbach, which is now located in Chemnitz. Together with Neukirchen, it passed to the von Taube family for around 200 years from 1615. Until the 19th century, Neukirchen remained a village of farmers, craftsmen and millers, as can still be seen today in the village structure with many listed farm buildings and a historic mill. With industrialisation in the 19th century, Neukirchen gained a post office and railway station, and from 1900 a series of prestigious villas were built, followed by the first cooperative housing estates from 1908.
Today, Neukirchen and the neighbouring municipality of Jahnsdorf form the tourist community "Würschnitztal - With Potential", which can be explored on the Würschnitztalweg trail, among other things. The village also offers pilgrim hostels on the Saxon Way of St James at the Bochmann organic farm. Special highlights include the Neukirchen summer pool and the houses of light, which faithfully recreate historical buildings and create a unique atmosphere. Social life is organised by numerous cultural, sports and local heritage associations.
