Oberlungwitz

"Lungsch", stocking town, 752 years, stocking knitting machines, ELBEO factory - three- and four-sided farms, "Neue Welt" outdoor pool, "Hirschgrund" nature reserve, "Sachsenring" race track, driver safety training courses

Between the cultural capital of Chemnitz and the automobile and Schumann city of Zwickau, around 6,000 people live in Oberlungwitz, in the home idiom of "Lungsch". in 2023, the town celebrated its 750th birthday, and in 2036 it will celebrate "100 years of town charter". This was granted in 1936 because the population had grown to almost 10,000 at the time, thanks in particular to the flourishing economy with world-renowned hosiery production and the construction of globally sought-after hosiery knitting machines. Imposing industrial buildings such as the ELBEO factory - the largest German hosiery factory in the 1930s with 2,800 employees - bear witness to this history and stand in architectural contrast to numerous three- and four-sided farmsteads or the historic Postgut, which give Oberlungwitz a rather rural character with a high feel-good factor. Leisure areas such as the small "Neue Welt" open-air swimming pool and the town park are also a testament to this.

Further nature experiences await in the "Hirschgrund" nature reserve to the south-east of the town gates - and thus far enough away from the famous "Sachsenring", which is located in the north-west of Oberlungwitz. This is not only a regular venue for major racing events: Anyone can complete the world-famous race track as part of driver safety training courses.
