Altar veilings in churches in Chemnitz and the Capital of Culture region

The exhibition series is based on the traditional veiling of altars during Lent, between Ash Wednesday and Easter. The first known Lenten cloth used for veiling covered a crucifix in the Saxon town of Zittau in 1472 – and thus called for prayer and reflection. Ash Wednesday in 2025 is on 5 March, which is also the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Chemnitz city centre. Both represent an occasion for Saxon and international artists to redesign public spaces with works in churches.

When? March 5, 2025 to April 20, 2025
