A unifying tango concert

The Saxon Mozart Society invited enthusiastic singers and instrumentalists from Germany, Poland, Czechia, Italy, Ukraine and Austria to a special tango concert at the European Summer Philharmonic and Choir. In the Capital of Culture year, they all paid tribute to the city of Chemnitz as the cradle of the bandoneon. Carl Friedrich Uhlig's invention of the concertina in Chemnitz in 1834 marked the beginning of the bandoneon's triumphant rise as the characteristic instrument of Argentine tango. The amateurs and professionals were led by the octet of the Gran Orquesta Carambolage around tango legend Jürgen Karthe, which had a unique line-up with ten bandoneons alone. This bandoneon section was the highlight of the orchestra and gave the tango its soul. The concert was repeated the following day in Chomutov, Czech Republic.

From 5 to 9 July, a four-day rehearsal phase took place, during which the programme was developed under the guidance of professional mentors.
