Passio

Arvo Pärt's St John Passion in front of Michael Morgner's Lenten cloth

Arvo Pärt’s Passio, one of the most significant works of sacred music of the 20th century, will be performed in a unique setting at Freiberger Dom. This moving, contemplative piece invites listeners to step away from the usual drama of Passion music and immerse themselves in Pärt’s quiet, simple musical language. Flowing like a gentle, spiritual stream, his music carries the audience for over an hour—without grand gestures, yet profoundly touching in its pure beauty, bringing a deep sense of calm.

The music is accompanied by a Lenten veil created by artist Michael Morgner, which covers the altar and simultaneously serves as the stage design for the Passion. The combination of Morgner’s art and Pärt’s music within the 500-year-old historic church creates a truly special and unforgettable atmosphere.
