Ask German tourists in British Columbia, CA what brought them there and you’ll probably hear romantic notions of the North American wilderness and its inhabitants that don’t quite align with reality. You’ll often hear people say they were inspired to travel afar by Karl May’s adventure books. This project turns the tables: Artists from British Columbia are inventing stories about Chemnitz and the Ore Mountains and creating fictional heroes. Like May, they first researched the setting, then read interviews and other background material. In Canada, they rendered their stories artistically. Their narratives, now artworks, are on their way as works of art now in Hohenstein-Ernstthal thanks to the Silberbüchse e.V. to be exhibited in shop windows and public spaces across the Capital of Culture region. You’ll also be able to interact with them on train journeys between Chemnitz and Chomutov.

When? From September 2025 until November 2025

Where? Shop windows in Hohndorf, Hohenstein-Ernsthal and Chemnitz
