Capital of Culture on wheels: The participation mobile

What is the participation mobile? The so-called participation mobile, also known as the Macher*faktur, will be seen more often during the Capital of Culture. It is a mobile wagon that can be coupled to a bicycle and used to travel flexibly to different locations. With the help of the workshop bike trailer, young and old can meet, learn, play and exchange ideas together at almost any location. The project is presented in more detail in the following video.

How did it come about? The participation mobile was created together with students Rosalie, Magdalena and Cornelius from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle. In their last semester project (winter semester 22/23), they worked on the topic of intergenerational craft exchange as part of the "Complex Design" department with Prof Christian Zöllner and Amelie Goldfuß. The result is the Macher*faktur.

What role does the participation mobile play for the Capital of Culture? Together with committed Chemnitz residents, the Macher*faktur is putting the Capital of Culture on wheels and on the streets of Chemnitz! It will be used for various projects, including Team Generations, the volunteer programme and 3000Garagen.

What's next for the participation mobile? In a workshop with the students, the mobile is to be made fit for use. This will take place on 25 August 2023 from 4 p.m. at Holzkombinat (Schiersandstraße 21, 09116 Chemnitz). The final painting will take place on 27 August from 2 p.m. in the Stadtwirtschaft (Augustusburger Str. 93A, 09116 Chemnitz). While the float is being prepared, there will also be discussions about how the mobile can be used and what mobile participation in the Capital of Culture process could look like in general.

Contribute your own ideas and visions! We look forward to talking to you at the Holzkombinat or in the Stadtwirtschaft. If you would like to take part, please contact Dirk Zinner, head of the volunteers programme, directly at volunteer@chemnitz2025.de.
