"Colourful stones for accessibility" fundraising campaign

To mark the annual Day of Inclusion on 5 May 2024, we want to work with interested parties to build ramps made of bricks that enable barrier-free access where it is otherwise made difficult by steps. The colourful bricks not only draw attention to the everyday obstacles that wheelchair users, people with rollators or parents with pushchairs often encounter, but also send a practical signal for inclusion.

In the spirit of sustainability, the ramps are built from donated building blocks. As several thousand bricks are needed for this, the Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH team cordially invites you to donate bricks for accessibility and inclusion with immediate effect. Donations can be handed in from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Capital of Culture premises (Hartmannstr. 5, 09111 Chemnitz).

The project is supported by Rita Ebel, the so-called "Lego grandma" from Hanau, who has been building ramps from the colourful bricks on a voluntary basis for over 20 years, making life easier for people with limited mobility. She herself says: "I want to provide food for thought for a more disabled-friendly society and give people the impetus to become active and improve things themselves" (dpa). The project picks up on this impulse as part of the diversity programme of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH. The colourful ramps draw attention to the everyday problems of people with disabilities, make a small contribution to improvement and spread good cheer in the process.

Everyone is invited to build ramps together if they enjoy making and clamping things. On the day of action, 5 May 2024, construction will begin at 11 a.m. on Chemnitz's Schlossteichinsel and the result will be tested live at the end of the day when the ramps are ready. The ramps will be used for charitable purposes in future and will be made available to interested organisations and projects. At the same time, a varied programme of events, panel discussions and culture will take place from 14:00 to 18:00 on "Inclusion Day".

Lego is neither a sponsor nor a co-operation partner of Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH or the Capital of Culture.
