The "ECoC Echo" initiative aims to secure the long-term effects of the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC). The aim is to continue the positive impetus for the cultural sector, regional development and international cooperation beyond the title year. Strategies are to be developed jointly in order to utilise and further develop existing networks, knowledge and structures in the long term.

The project was jointly initiated by nine European countries, including Germany with Chemnitz. Former, current and future Capitals of Culture are coming together for the project: In addition to Chemnitz 2025, these are Leeuwarden 2018 (Netherlands), Novi Sad 2022 (Serbia), Veszprém 2023 (Hungary), Tartu 2024 (Estonia), Oulu 2026 (Finland), Liepāja 2027 (Latvia), Évora 2027 (Portugal) and Bourges 2028 (France). It is also supported by partners at local and regional level who play a key role in shaping and implementing cultural policy.

The initiative is co-funded by the EU under the Interreg Europe programme. The results will be presented in Bourges at the end of 2028.
