Garage Campus: a new cultural centre for Chemnitz

After two years of construction, the Garage Campus was finally opened on 21 March 2025. A former tram depot has been transformed into a new cultural and meeting place for Chemnitz - a space for exhibitions, concerts, theatre and creative ideas. As one of 30 intervention areas as part of Chemnitz 2025, the Garage Campus shows how places can gain new meaning for the city community through transformation. In keeping with its past as a tram depot, it is easily accessible by tram: Line 1, stop "Garagen-Campus".

During the Capital of Culture year, the Garage Campus will become the stage for numerous projects from the Chemnitz 2025 programme. The large #3000Garages exhibition will use artistic formats to showcase the Chemnitz garage landscape. At Haltestelle Kultur, a tram becomes a creative workshop and meeting place. The exhibition Stadt am Fluss - Stadt im Fluss deals with the flow of things and thoughts, while History of Citizens tells the lives of others so that they are not forgotten. There are also many other exhibitions and uses such as congresses and projects with schools, universities and training companies.

Anyone who would like to realise their own ideas in the Garage Campus can register on the website garagen-campus.de. The site thrives on active participation and co-design. Citizens were already involved in the planning process.
