The European Capital of Culture 2025 will be colourful, loud, energetic and creative! That much is certain. The record number of 113 micro-projects submitted is proof of this. So many makers who want to shape their city and the region - it was particularly difficult for the jury to make a selection. But after countless hours of heated debate and smoking heads, a decision has finally been made!

A total of 16 projects have been selected and will receive funding.

But we would also like to thank all those who unfortunately did not make it this time and will of course continue to be available to answer your questions and network with you.

The jury:

  • Nadine Rothe(communication design & illustration/member of the programme council/among others Huhlern e.V.)
  • Etelka Kobuss (Migration Officer City of Chemnitz/Member of the Programme Council)
  • Lisa Lotze (Creative Saxony/Member of the Steering Group/among others Art Festival ArschKreativ)
  • Prof. Dr Bernadette Malinowski (Professor of "Modern German and Comparative Literature" (Faculty of Philosophy) TU Chemnitz)
  • Marta Gonzalez de Mendibil (BEGEHUNGEN art and culture festival)
  • Ferenc Csák (Head of the City of Chemnitz Cultural Centre/Chemnitz2025 Project Officer)
  • Egmont Elschner (Chairman of the City of Chemnitz Cultural Advisory Board/Member of the Steering Group)
  • Tobias Möller (Member of the City of Chemnitz Cultural Advisory Board/Network for Cultural and Youth Work e.V./Member of the Programme Council)

Some of the selected projects will be realised in the next few weeks and we are looking forward to the first results:

Hot pictures of Chemnitz

Climate change does not stop at a Capital of Culture and is to be visualised with the help of thermography. The images will then be shown to all Chemnitz residents in a subsequent exhibition.

Living together in the future

How do we want to live together in the future? An attempt to answer this question will be made through shadow theatre in vacant shops.

The doubts of the wren

The allotment garden - the epitome of stuffiness or a place of encounter and creativity? A raku ceramics workshop at the allotment garden association "alte Radrennbahn e.V." aims to get to the bottom of these prejudices.

The third-best Saxon blog in the "Miscellaneous" category turns 10 and celebrates with a print edition and a pop-up event in the Borssenanger Gallery.

Film project - Saffron

What it feels like to come to the city as a migrant and to experience the helpfulness of the people of Chemnitz - the film "Safran" aims to provide answers.

Burgstädt culture barn

Filling an old barn with new, creative life - a great idea from the creators of the Kulturscheune Burgstädt. Equipped with exhibition rooms and a stage, we are already looking forward to the first events!

Connecting the towers of Europe with sound

There are tower carillons in many places in Europe. The towers are connected by a band of good bell sounds, a greeting of peace, a note of friendship. A playing and composition competition aims to bring these sounds of Europe to Chemnitz.

Chemnitz Valley cabaret theatre

A place in the countryside, a meeting place for art, culture and gastronomy? It's good that the new cabaret theatre between Chemnitz, Burgstädt and Mittweida will soon create such a place!

Culture posters

With a series of posters, the Buntmacher*innen want to show how diverse, colourful and creative everyday life in Chemnitz is.

SOUL-TRAIN

A tram ride full of good humour, partying and musical surprises - that's the idea behind the SOUL-TRAIN. Perhaps the new insider tip for all European music fans?

BrühlMobil

The idea behind the BrühlMobil is a mobile couch that jets through the city and brings all kinds of people together. Whether creative and artistic makers, explorers, musicians, podcasters, debaters, new thinkers or all those who have always wanted to say something, everyone will find their place on the BrühlMobil.

The language of angels

Angels as heavenly messengers and mediators between cultures - a participatory art project aims to trace these traces in the city.

Bicycle Bingo

Geocaching by bike - soon to be experienced in Chemnitz and the cultural region! The initiators of the project are planning interactive bike stops where there will be all sorts of exciting and surprising things to discover.

Film project - Chemnitz streets

How to deal with right-wing violence and threats against fellow citizens? The film "Chemnitzer Straßen" aims to shed light on acts of violence and threats by neo-Nazis in Chemnitz from 2016 onwards and give a voice to those affected by the events and the associated social sentiment.

Art machine

A machine that prints out a picture or a short story at the touch of a button - sounds like a great idea for Brühl Boulevard!

Choir for Kiez

The declared aim of the song "Chemnitzer sind wir" is to become an anthem for all Capital of Culture residents. A professional music video will soon invite us to hum, sing and dance along!

Thanks to the efforts of the Cultural Advisory Board of the City of Chemnitz, we were able to provide additional financial support for further ideas from this round:

Makers of all countries unite

A piece of public space behind the Karl-Marx-Kopf was revitalised with a great deal of commitment and dedication as part of a "Take a seat!" project. With colourful flowers, seating and outdoor games. Now it's clear: the project will continue until at least 2025!

Dance into the renaissance!

Chemnitz dance culture revived! You will soon be able to shake a leg to the sounds of Chemnitz music from the Renaissance period, played on historical instruments such as the cistern and hurdy-gurdy.

Questions to the zeitgeist

What was that about time again? In an interactive workshop, the little ones can playfully explore the phenomenon of time.

ReAnimierBar

For a quarter of a century, the "Subway To Peter" was a real trendy pub on the Sonnenberg, which is now to be filled with life again.

FREIRaum

Chemnitz is also on its way to becoming the Capital of Culture in 2025 - but where is this already visible? The photo project aims to accompany this journey and capture it in pictures.

Culture - Nature - Literature We write Chemnitz

What do you see there? A writing workshop for children and young people in which they can write about exhibits from the Chemnitz Museum.

FLANIERLESEN

Glamnitz

A journey to the hidden highlights, to the still sleeping possibilities of the city, a journey that makes blind people see and shows that fashion can build bridges and enable encounters between generations, cultures and genders. You can experience this at the Chemnitz Outdoor Fashion Weekend.

NischlMusi

From the Alpine summit to the Chemnitz valley: the NischlMusi on a bradl tour in Chemnitz and the cultural region. In their luggage: traditional brass music, freshly washed and dusted off.

Film project - Lonig & Havendel

The feature film aims to combine a quirky small-town feel with the atmosphere and language of the "somewhat different Germans" and thus give visibility to the long invisible Vietnamese-Saxon population group.

Paris - Mélange

Bienvenue chez nous! At the Franco-German Culture Days, a broad alliance of artists and initiatives from Chemnitz and abroad showcase a cosmopolitan and culturally diverse Chemnitz and aim to inspire people to engage in intercultural dialogue.

City map

Open up access, broaden your view! The participatory culture in our city is as colourful as its residents and guests. How practical is a city map that shows the diverse and decentralised maker culture in Chemnitz at a glance!
