From 5 April, 10 stations in the Chemnitz city area
30.000 garages can be found in the city of Chemnitz, most of which were built collectively and by the residents themselves during the GDR era. The #3000Garage Trail invites you to take a stroll through the Chemnitz garage landscape. The 10 stations of the trail can be visited from Saturday 5 April. They will then be open all day until the end of the year.
Each station tells a piece of local garage history: In addition to classic GDR garages, there are real gems, such as the historic high-rise garage from 1928 or the coach house at the Villa Esche designed by Henry van de Velde. The trail does not follow a fixed route - anyone can start at any point and organise the tour according to their own preferences. A map is available in both digital and printed form, with three recommended routes: on foot, by tram or by bus.
The information stations can be recognised by the eye-catching neon yellow funnels protruding from the ground. If you stop here, you can immerse yourself in exciting stories about the garages and their users. Surprising details have been creatively packed into design elements - a design developed by budding designers from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle.
These places will also be the venues for the events of the #3000Garages project. It is dedicated to Chemnitz's garages and revitalises them with artistic projects. For example, the textile participatory artwork Vogelperspektiven will be created in the Wollgarage, the #3000Garages Festival will take place in the Garagenhof Harthweg and the interactive art installation Fischelant by Cosima Terrasse will be on display in the Garagenhof Theaterstraße from 24 May.
