On 5 December, International Volunteer Day, the Chemnitz 2025 volunteer programme took part in a special campaign within the European Volunteer Coordinators Network (EVCN). The initiative comes from a coordinator from Tartu2024 and has a clear goal: the volunteer programmes of former and future European Capitals of Culture should make their international ties visible by exchanging postcards.
The idea was born back in 2021 - as a sign of mutual support that goes beyond digital channels and offers something tangible. This year, 11 cities took part in the campaign.
Our volunteers in Chemnitz were particularly creative: 40 individually designed postcards were sent to the Capital of Culture Oulu 2026 in Finland and distributed to the volunteers there. In return, Chemnitz received lovingly designed cards from Évora 2027 in Portugal, which will now be passed on to the volunteers who took part in the design.
This campaign shows how strong the network of the Capitals of Culture is - and how important the work of the volunteers is for the European cultural dialogue.
