"Altar Wrappings - Interventions on the Passion" comes to an end.

Easter is just around the corner and the altars veiled by Sabine Herrmann and Michael Morgner on Ash Wednesday in the Catholic Provost Church of St John Nepomuk in Chemnitz and in St Mary's Cathedral in Freiberg will be unveiled again.

The end of Lent also marks the end of the exhibition series "Altar Coverings - Interventions on the Passion", which was initiated and realised by the Kulturkirche 2025 together with the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 GmbH and the Regional Management European Cultural Region Chemnitz, the PURPLE PATH team and local partners.

Sabine Herrmann created the large-format work "Witnesses without text" for the apse of the St John Nepomuk Catholic Provost's Church on Chemnitz's Kaßberg. Michael Morgner's expansive work "Ecce Homo - Siehe, der Mensch!", created for this purpose, covers the 1560 altar retable in St Mary's Cathedral in Freiberg. The Passion series is curated by DAS KOLLEKTIV Herrmann Killisch Rheinfurth.

On Holy Saturday (8 April 2023), the unveiling of the altar will begin in the Provost's Church of St. John Nepomuk with an ecumenical vigil (nightly prayer service) at 9 pm. This celebration will be organised by the Ukrainian dancer Anastasiya Borisenko, the artist Sabine Herrmann, the ecumenical jubilee choir and Matthias Böhm on the organ.

After a rite of light, the light of peace from Bethlehem is carried outside in procession by all participants. The Easter fire is lit with the peace light and then blessed. Those interested can keep fire watch until the start of the Easter Vigil at 5 o'clock. Hot tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided on site.

The unveiling of the Freiberg altar in St. Mary's Cathedral will take place on the Easter Vigil (9 April 2023) at 5 a.m.
