The ART FESTIVAL BEGEHUNGEN (SITE VISITS) has been held in the city for over 20 years and is regarded as one of Chemnitz’ outstanding cultural events. Every year, a different empty space is opened up briefly and revitalised with art. A former prison, abandoned allotment gardens, an old brewery and an overgrown railway station have all been festival venues. The festival’s trademark is its unconventional approach to art. For this reason, the »site visits« are not just a temporary art exhibition – they are meeting places for people from all walks of life. In 2025, the festival will take place in the decommissioned Chemnitz-Nord lignite thermal power plant. In the midst of the plant’s impressive industrial architecture, the festival will focus on burning issues such as resource consumption, biodiversity and climate change, offering an international exhibition, concerts, readings, films, lectures and debates.
