Listening is often taken for granted - after all, our ears are always open and we are constantly aware of sounds - whether intentionally or not. But is hearing the same as listening? Can acoustic perception perhaps be refined, deepened, made more conscious? These questions will be explored in this workshop.

Inspired by Pauline Oliveros' "Deep Listening" method, we will approach listening in a series of simple exercises. No previous knowledge is required, all you need is an open mind, some writing materials and a pair of working ears.

There are also new things to discover in the supposedly familiar soundscape of the city. We will go very slowly on an exploratory walk to create sound maps, collect exciting sounds and much more.

Participation is free of charge, but please register in advance via https://forms.gle/AbuauJcCCANWPSgK7 . The workshop will be followed by a free open-air concert in the same area, which will conclude the Deep Listening Day.

The workshop will be organised by Heinrich Lenz, composer, sound artist and event organiser from Cologne. He studied electronic composition in Weimar, London and Essen and worked intensively with forms and modes of perception. His musical work is characterised by an intensive exploration of the finer sounds at the limits of perception, the musical qualities of everyday sounds and music for altered states of consciousness.
