Towards the end of the 18th century, an increasing number of showmen with mechanical mining miniatures appeared at the Leipzig Trade Fair, providing information about working underground in return for a small donation. It was not uncommon for the tradesmen to be disabled miners. The film traces the development of an occupational identity in Saxon coal and steel mining based on the fate of the miners and their showpieces.

Followed by a discussion with the two filmmakers Ole I. Steinberg and Jonas Hermanns.
