How do you want to live? Long or rather short and intense? Edgar is dead and his father only finds out by chance. He hasn't seen his son since he was five years old. Now only the people Edgar spent his last months with are left to find out who he was. And then there are those strange tape recordings that Edgar sent to his best friend Willi, which nobody understood. Maybe they would have explained something. But then there was an explosion.

Inspired by Goethe's epistolary novel, Plenzdorf tells a story about love and longing - positioned in the GDR of the 1970s. In his search for his place in this world, Edgar finds love and rejection, wants to prove himself and fails himself. All the while, he is accompanied by an old Reclam notebook. What this Werther writes in it - Edgar understands it better from day to day.
