The Shadows is a silent theatre piece, which tells contemporary stories of people who are strikingly reminiscent of well-known characters from Greek tragedy. Without any references to antiquity, Oedipus, Antigone, and Medea suddenly appear in the midst of our present day. The title of the play evokes many associations.
A man learns as an adult that he was abducted during the Argentine military dictatorship and raised by a foreign family. This knowledge completely up ends his love, his origins, his life, and his entire identity. Then there is a journalist searching for her brother, who disap peared while working as a doctor in a war zone. Against every warning, she travels there herself, determined to find him, dead or alive. Lastly, a woman flees to Europe with her husband and child in search of the promise of a better life. Betrayed and abandoned, she is ulti mately left alone in a refugee camp. Her love turns first to anger, then to hope, and finally to despair.
