Stream of Memory - THEATER DER WELT

The Indonesian Papermoon Puppet Theatre from the island of Java uses artfully crafted puppets, light and movement to create an imaginative world that enchants audiences of all ages.
A large, human-like puppet with a sad expression is illuminated by a beam of light on the stage and surrounded by fog, while a person stands partially behind it in the dark theatre.

The title of this quiet yet intense evening of puppet theatre from Indonesia could be translated as Stream of Memory. During the forced isolation of people in the years of the corona pandemic, the artist couple Maria Tri Sulistyani and Iwan Effendi began to develop a work that arose from their longing for closeness, relationship and the feeling of connection with other people. This longing has resulted in a stage narrative without words, a story about remembering, forgetting and what remains between people when transience sets in. The entertaining evening is intended for younger and older people alike.

From 18 June to 5 July 2026, Chemnitz will be in the international spotlight: Germany's largest international theatre festival "Theatre of the World" is coming to Chemnitz - directly following the Capital of Culture year 2025. For three weeks, Chemnitz will be a meeting place for artists, audiences and theatre enthusiasts from all over the world. A lively celebration of the performing arts will take place on stages, in urban spaces and in unusual locations, overcoming borders and bringing together stories from all parts of the world.

Nine international curators from Australia, Canada, Colombia, Argentina, South Africa, Greece, Jordan, India, Senegal and China are responsible for the festival programme. They will meet in Chemnitz in November to select around 40 outstanding productions - works that they have previously viewed in their regions. The result is an inspiring panorama of current theatre forms, languages and perspectives.
