Garden colonies mostly emerged in European cities in the course of industrialisation and the development of the labour movement. Later, in socialist times, people still grew vegetables and tended fruit trees, but the gardens also offered open spaces and room for creativity. Users from three European countries talked about what it was like back then. For one day, the Kappler Hang garden colony was transformed into a stage, with lively performances, interactive games and storytelling sessions in which old and new users reminisced about their experiences and encounters in and between the gardens.
