The Free State of Saxony's stand at the major democracy festival to mark the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law in Berlin will be organised by the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. The Chemnitz 2025 team is bringing a programme to the capital that focuses on joint action in an open, tolerant and united society. This is a foretaste of the Capital of Culture year 2025.
Ines Fröhlich, State Secretary for Digitalisation and Mobility and a native of Chemnitz, will be on site to talk to citizens.
The Chemnitz 2025 team is bringing a constitutional domino to the capital. The Chemnitz join-in carpentry workshop "Holzkombinat" has made 3500 11x6cm wooden dominoes and engraved the text of the Basic Law on them. What happens when a domino falls? Visitors are invited to playfully engage with the Basic Law.
Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German constitution has applied to the whole of Germany. Young East Germans still feel the after-effects of the division today, although Generation Z only recognises a united Germany. In their film project "(K)Einheit - Wie die Gen Z über den Osten denkt", Lisa Trebs and Vanessa Beyer from Chemnitz show the perspectives of young East Germans on a united Germany. The films, which are the result of one of the so-called micro-projects for the European Capital of Culture, will be shown at the Saxony stand.
After the right-wing extremist riots in Chemnitz in 2018, Buntmacher:innen was founded to show that the city's society does not accept racism and discrimination, but instead works together to create a cosmopolitan Chemnitz. The members of the association have developed various action formats with which they will present themselves at the Democracy Festival in Berlin and invite people to join in
The Free State of Saxony will be presenting Chemnitz 2025 at the Demokratiefest with a small "garage courtyard". These typical East German community locations are at the centre of one of the major projects for the Capital of Culture year. There are around 30,000 garages in Chemnitz, and in 2025 some of them will be used for various artistic formats and the biographies of the garage users will be made visible.
In the garage microcosm in Berlin, Chemnitz performer Maik Sparwasser will perform his popular cassette disco and the Kotburschi artists' collective will design the garage courtyard with live graffiti.
The European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 will open on 18 January 2025.
Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH is realising major projects such as the PURPLE PATH art and sculpture trail and the #3000Garages project on its own initiative. The majority of the programme, which will take place in Chemnitz and the 38 municipalities in the Capital of Culture region, will be shaped by local players with new international networks. Joint cooperation, dialogue and exchange are at the heart of the activities. The fundamental democratic values are the irrefutable basis for this.
